You're right   Written by Louise C (4/20/2003 8:06 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR - Tone of voice, penned by CarolTS
Are you new?

] That's interesting - you must read this section with a totally different tone of voice than I hear in my head!

] To go along with Cheryl's questions in the post below - what tone of voice do you hear? Yelling? Extreme anger?

Anger is probably too strong a word; I'm not sure whether to read it as irritation, or just ridicule.
However whatever the tone was, I think my reaction was to the fact that he reduced her to tears. I was focusing on the result rather than the action itself.
Up to that point he'd laughed and teased her about her imaginings, and even encouraged them.
Suddenly he reacts in a way that upsets her greatly. But as Cheryl points out, such a reaction was justified, and was just what she needed.

So I take it all back.
What a wonderful thing a group read is - I have read this book half a dozen times over thirty years and never questioned my own interpretation before.
