] Mr. Tilney, the former General, clearly valued work and industry over idleness and dissipation. I've always thought that Fredick's career in the army was mostly the result of Mr. Tilney's insistance.

And I can see that he would have brought a lot of pressure on Frederick to be doing something (especially in the military since he was in there). But I still think the major reason Frederick was there was to escape being at home after his mother died. Perhaps some of his resentment of his father comes from the fact that he had to work when, in reality, financially he really didn't have to. But I think more of it was just due to his father being who he was!
