I was trying to research the particular rules of conduct regarding extended visits to bulk up my post on Catherine's dismissal from the Abbey but I realized that this wasn't necessary-rude is as rude does,no matter what century it takes place in!
It's hard on Catherine but I found myself feeling even worse for Eleanor-she invites CM over(a girl not only that she likes but her brother's courting as well),strives to make her welcome despite her father's temperment and pushy overtures and then has this disagreeable "duty" thrust upon her.
I'm sure she objected to this plan as soon as her father ordered her to send Catherine off but I have no doubt than he forcibly overrode her:( Her guilt over this whole mess is plainly seen when she begs Catherine to write to her and let her know that Catherine arrived safely at home-"but this, with the look of
sorrow accompanying it,was enough to melt Catherine's pride in a moment".
It does Catherine credit that she managed to get home without much trouble and that her family was very comforting but not too coddling(her mother reminds me of mine with her"snap out of it" talk:D).
On another note,I have to say this has been an excellant GR,most lively indeed:)
