in consequence of the missive, GR: The tyranny of food, penned by Cheryl
I have a copy of Jane Austen and Food(got it from a JA book dealer) and it's a great book. One phrase that leaped out at me while reading your post was"His son & daughter's observations were of a different kind. They had seldom seen him eat so heartily at any tabel but his;and never before known him so little disconcerted by the melted butter's being oiled" IIRC,the butter's being oiled may be a result of not having enough fresh milk available so oil was added to thicken the butter. The fact that the General(who is so very particular in his habits) is willing to overlook such a detail shows that he is very pleased with his schemes to hook up Catherine & Henry(until he finds out how much she's really worth, moneywise)and the type of man he is usually is. |
