I didn't really pick up on the food thing until the trip to Woodston. That's when I realized how really important it was to the General. He seems to genuinely like food but there is definitely a pattern that establishes meals as a manner of control whether consciously done or not. All the incidences you list shows that Austen is consistent in showing this, don't you think? Very interesting to say the least.
