GR : Higher expectations   Written by joe m (4/16/2003 9:54 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: So how much money do the Morlands have?, penned by Cheryl

For reasons known only to the Thorpes, they believed the Morlands to be a rich family. I think we've reached a point in the novel where we can conclusively call them delusional. They had an inkling he was well off before they met up in Bath. Add in their connection to the Allens, and IT & JT assumed there was much more money than reality would dictate.
