nice, but not easy   Written by Ann2 (4/10/2003 2:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, GR: Translations, penned by Cheryl
Are you new?

] And Ann, I remember Barbara asking how the Swedish translation dealt with the "nice" conversation. It's a pun on an English word, she wondered how that would go over in Swedish. How was it - care to give a report? ;-)

I have indeed been thinking of Barbara's interest and struggling with this. The problem is: How can I be sure I "get" the exact meanings of the word nice the way native speakers do?

The translation does make sense IMO in that there is a word in Swedish that is also used with many different meanings. the word is Fine (= Swedish fin)!
A nice day. A nice sort of girl. These expressions both suits the Swedish meaning of this word.
A nice walk, now this I think ought to be a pleasant walk rather than a fine one.
The translator skips the pun of its being a nice word by saying instead that fine is a remarkably useful word.
The neatness, propriety, delicacy and refinement are fine(!) and so are the references to dress, sentiments and choice. All in all I think she does a very good job.

We do have the same kind of "overuse" of words in Swedish today. A word gets fashionable and is used constantly until it turns a matter of ridicule when the original sense has paled or is altogether lost. When did this begin, I wonder? Back on the slopes of Ararat?? ;)
