A right to care as well as be angry!   Written by Ann2 (4/7/2003 2:13 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Perhaps knowing already, penned by Elena
Are you new?

is perhaps a good summary of their initial feelings in the theatre. ;-)

] ...I mean to bring my fellow-boarders' attention to Catherine's and Henry's dialogue there. Henry: "I angry! I could have no right." Catherine: "Nobody would have thought you had no right who saw your face." Then he smiles and sits and talks about the play - but isn't it the very moment when Henry acknowledged to himself that he really had a reason for disappointment that they failed to meet? Or, as JA puts much better than any words of mine can, " Is there a Henry in the world who could be insensible to such a declaration? "

It is a wonderful exchange even from when C spots him in the box and can't help but watch him anxiously, while he is determined to take no notice of the unreliable Miss Morland. But I tried to reign in my romantic tendencies, for I thought this could all be vexation on Eleanor's behalf. (I see Henry as rather protective of his sister a bit like Darcy versus Georgiana. These siblings have both been forced to seek comfort in each other.)

The "Is there a Henry in the world" passage is as dear to me as it seems to be to you, and I will gladly look upon it as a heartopener for Mr Tilney.
Catherine's eager remorse and unguarded way of letting him know how these events have tormented her, must certainly make her explanation credible. :-D
