GR: The Royal Crescent   Written by Cheryl (4/6/2003 12:00 a.m.)

Are you new?

The Royal Crescent is mentioned several times in this week’s chapters. The above picture is an aerial view of this very fashionable address and surrounding grounds. Catherine and Isabella walk there on a Sunday when, after finding the crowd at the pump room to be insupportable

”… they hastened away to the Crescent, to breathe the fresh air of better company.”

Mrs. Allen had the pleasure of running into the Tilneys there while Catherine was out being bored silly by John Thorpe and his gig.

"Yes; we agreed to take a turn in the Crescent, and there we met Mrs. Hughes, and Mr. and Miss Tilney walking with her." … "Yes, we walked along the Crescent together for half an hour. They seem very agreeable people. Miss Tilney was in a very pretty spotted muslin, and I fancy, by what I can learn, that she always dresses very handsomely.”

And finally, this is the scene of John Thorpe’s awful lie to Eleanor about Catherine having to break her engagement to walk and Catherine’s subsequent running after the them

“…and quickening her pace when she got clear of the Crescent, she almost ran over the remaining ground till she gained the top of Milsom Street.”

Below is a picture I took of the park below the Crescent. As you can see, lots of room to wander around, breathing in the rarified air. ;-)
