] What I can't decide is whether this absence of parental worry is the result of a sanguine nature or whether Mr. and Mrs. Morland are as naive about the less pleasant side of the world as is their daughter. Frankly, I keep swaying back and forth between the two. What do you all think?

I suppose they must have trusted the Allens to take good care of Catherine? Mr Allen was respected in Fullerton and had the means and Mrs Allen had obviously been kind to their daughter. It does seem that they were a bit naive. Can it be a consequence from having many children? You simply haven't got time to worry about every unpleasant possibility.
