The book makes it clear at one point (correct me if I'm wrong) that Mrs. Allen was no beauty at all.

There is also quite a good joke about Mr. Allen being as good a judge of beauty as anyone could hope to find...when in actuality Mr. Allen married a very plain woman, indeed.
