Actually your description of John Thorpe matches my elder brother quite well! Yikes! But I guess my brother really cares about his family, but just thinks it is kind of "cool" not to show that. He is approaching 30 but still in his puberty. :)

Family members can have different ways of showing their affection, but I agree that in the case of John Thorpe I have not seen affection at all. Still, I would not say based on these 8 chapters that this is a messed up family.
