in consequence of the missive, GR: Henry not hooked, but Catherine?, penned by Cheryl
] I think Catherine is hooked - or very close to being so. ;-) Oh, absolutely. He consumes her mind unless some other wonderful fantasy (ie. Udolpho) is currently and actively occupying all of her mental space. She's completely infatuated - as is sometimes the way with teenage girls - before she even realizes that she's been bitten by the love bug. Oh, I believe our dear Miss Morland was completely taken with Mr. Tilney from the very first conversation. His wit and mysterious charm swept her off her little inexperienced feet. I believe that she actually became AWARE that she was "hooked" upon first seeing him with his sister at the assembly rooms. Her momentary discomfort at seeing him with an unknown young lady was really quite charming. Naturally - being the sensible girl she is - she ciphered out who Miss Tilney was without a lot of silliness or drama, and the discomfort was soon explained away. She DID feel the jealous discomfort, however, and that spoke volumes to me. It was my first clue that Miss Morland was really beginning to admit within herself that she had a growing sentimental attachment to Henry. |
