] My Chapman's edition has a footnote about this, that JA is quoting Mr. Richardson in The Rambler .

There are versions with footnotes! Be still my heart! I've been enjoying JA for 20 years out of the same old hard cover anthology (lovely leather and gold edged pages). I see I've been missing something and will have to add to my collection. Thanks for the information.
