In the second paragraph of the book JA describes CM at age fifteen: "Her love of dirt gave way to an inclination for finery, and she grew clean as she grew smart."
Based on what we have read in the first 8 chapters, what do you think "she grew smart" means? Does it mean that she gained some natural wisdom, that she remembered something she was supposed to have learned at an earlier time, that she was less often inattentive and less occasionally stupid, or maybe that her imagination became more "grown up". Or something else entirely.
How does this statement correlate our perception of CM's intelligence and naivete during her first couple of weeks at Bath.
Thoughts?
