In chapter 1 it says that Catherine's mother did not insist upon her daughters being accomplished, that she was allowed to quit piano lessons after a year, and that she shirked her lessons whenever she could. Does anyone else think that some of Catherine's immaturity was due to this? I have taught reading in grade schools for 28 years and see everyday the consequences of children being allowed to do as they please. NA is a nice story with a happy ending, but in my experience this type of upbringing never results in a happy ending. What sort of a future did Catherine face with little education and no accomplishments? Her parents did not know that Henry Tilney would come along and marry her.
