] This brief account of the family is intended to supersede the necessity of a long and minute detail from Mrs. Thorpe herself, of her past adventures and sufferings, *snip* I don't think this passage refers to any actual adventures and sufferings, only the mundane details of Mrs. Thorpe's life that she seems to enjoy telling the world, whether or not the world is interested. I saw it as more of the delightful satire that fills these first 8 chapters. But perhaps I am wrong? |
