Not only that...   Written by Christiana (3/30/2003 11:08 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Detached from reality?, penned by Ann2
Are you new?

] That's so good, yes, and what struck me this time is that he doesn't care a jot what he is saying. Pretending to be an expert but just blabbering. Early on even Catherine notices this when she comments on his horse looking hot when Moreland and Thorpe are just arrived in Bath. Thorpe will not hear of it and offers to drive her to Lansdown Hill on the following day. Catherine asks if his horse doesn't want rest.

I think John Thorpe also literally cannot conceive of the fact that he might possibly be wrong. Someone (I can't recall who) once described an archetype called the Right Man (or Woman, as the case may be). The Right Man is the person who believes unequivicolly in his or her own justification--never apologizing, never reconsidering his opinions, never believing himself accountable for any harm he might do. Everything he says and does he considers right, on no pretext other than that he says or does it. I find Thorpe to be such a man.
