] He spends without thought. He drinks and gambles and makes reckless purchases. How is that possible if the family has no money?

Perhaps it's because of his reckless spending that Mrs. Thorpe and her daughters are financially constrained. With his father dead, John Thorpe has inherited all of his father's assets, being the eldest son and all, right? (See Cheryl's post, below).

Or, perhaps the negative description -- "Mrs. Thorpe was a widow, and not a very rich one" -- misleads us into thinking "poor". (see Cheryl's thread, below)
