in consequence of the missive, GR: Gold-digger, penned by Cheryl
My feeling that Isabella is a gold-digger comes from her behavior in Chapter VIII. It's been made plain from the family's introduction that the Thorpes haven't got a lot of money. Isabella is a silly thing, and she immeiately attached herself to Mr. Morland to the disgraceful exclusion of her friend.
Because she an Mr. Morland are merely acquaintances from a visit prior an only two days in Bath at the time of the dances in Chapter VIII, I can't find any decent reason for her to so utterly abandon Catherine unless she's ingratiating herself to Mr. Morland in the attempt to form an attachment.
She's poor compared to others in this circle. Mr. Morland is not. She's silly and materialistic...and all of her methods are mercenary.
