] John is at Oxford ~ what professions could he be studying for? My first thought was a clergyman ~ can you imagine sitting through one of his services?? (five hours later, the congregation stumbles out of the church, having lost their will to live...)

He is the eldest son. Eldest sons of gentlemen didn't usually study for a profession, professions were for younger sons. We don't know anything of their property, except that they live near London, or financial situation - yet. We'll have to keep an eye open in future weeks, and look for clues... ;-)
