novel reading in general   Written by Kresel (3/30/2003 10:25 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Udolpho and reading, penned by Emmeline
Are you new?

This is my first time reading NA, but since it was suggested that we choose a theme, I chose this one about the low esteem in which novels were held. It is an interesting double-edged sword. JA's defense of the novel, which seems to me a defense of herself, is one of the most interesting sections of the book so far. But the fact is, novels were the means by which young women received all sorts of false ideas about love, just as the media is today. I suppose it will be revealed, but one wonders how it was that Miss Tilney seems to have escaped their negative influence while Miss Isabella has not.
