GR: Why does this happen to so many of Jane's novels??   Written by Vivian L (3/30/2003 2:34 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Catherine was Susan, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

] in between the time the novel was first finished and JA's later efforts to publish it, another novel came out called Susan by a different authoress, so JA changed it.

Ok, this might need to be moved to AOA, but isn't it strange that both this novel and First Impressions (later, Pride and Prejudice) had to get renamed because another novel by the same name was published before she got them published??

By the way, just wondering, why did they refuse to publish it? Sure, they bought the manuscript, but the excuse of not having enough time to put it into publication is, IMHO, a very lame one. Any thoughts?
