in consequence of the missive, GR: History of publication, penned by Cheryl
] I wonder, if the gothic parody she lampooned would really have been so out of style that her work could not have been properly appreciated at the time? It certainly does not seem to suffer to us, but we have the benefit of distance.
Very interesting, Cheryl! This was one of the things I was wondering about in the advertisement, exactly what "places, manners, books, and opinions have undergone considerable changes." I wouldn't think things would have changed so much, but maybe it was the modern equivalent of disco music not being appreciated 13 years later (or 13 months later). I can't imagine it, but it may be so...
PS: Loved the slam: "That any bookseller should think it worth-while to purchase what he did not think it worth-while to publish seems extraordinary." Go, Jane!
