In the book -- chap 30 -- John Thorpe did not say Mr Allan made his fortune in trade -- chap 30 --
"For Catherine, however, the peculiar object of the generalís curiosity, and his own speculations, he had yet something more in reserve, and the ten or fifteen thousand pounds which her father could give her would be a pretty addition to Mr. Allenís estate. Her intimacy there had made him seriously determine on her being handsomely legacied hereafter; and to speak of her therefore as the almost acknowledged future heiress of Fullerton."
John Thorpe also misrepresented the Morlands by exaggerating their wealth and "sinking Half the children". If the Morlands had a small family instead of a large one, Catherine might indeed have almost 10,000 pounds instead of 3,000 pounds.
