NA2's idea of Mr Allen as being in trade.

Yes, Mr Allen was chief property owner around Fullerton and a wealthy gentleman.
In JA's time, trade was not an occupation for a gentleman; although a few gentlemen in JA's novels inherited fortunes derived from trade.
As I recall, NA2 has the scene of John Thorpe telling General Tilney Mr Allen had made a fortune from trade to spend on Catherine. I do find this idea of Mr Allen being retired from trade somewhat confusing.
Why did NA2 change Mr Allen into a retired tradesman. Any thoughts ?
