There is a difference between ignorance and imbecility. Someone who is an "imbecile" is incapable of learning, and hence, would satisfy the small percentage of men who wanted their women to be completely under their control.
However, someone who is merely ignorant, is capable of learning, and incidentally, catering to the vanity of men by giving them an opportunity to teach them. ;-) After all, in Jane Austen's era, men were given a better education than women, so I always thought that Austen was having a sly dig at the men who loved having their ego boosted in that way.
