...Catherine is living in a Gothic novel (at least in her own mind). But in fact, JA's point in NA is that Catherine does not live in a Gothic novel, that she is an absolute disappointment as a Gothic heroine; that is the joke.
I have tried to write a script for a musical version of NA, and that was the problem that stumped me, how to show that we are guilty of trying to impose upon Catherine an unreal reality, and that she gloriously fails to measure up to our misguided expectations.
As Graciela once pointed out to me when I asked (years ago) what Gothic novels Catherine might have read before traveling to Bath, there is no evidence that Catherine ever read any Gothic novels other than Udolpho.
