in consequence of the missive, Good Adaption of Northanger Abbey?, penned by Jerry
When I first watched NA1 (IMDB rating 5.7), I hoped a better adaptation would be made. I was very disappointed by NA2 (IMDB rating 7.3). It was not filmed in Bath and Andrew Davies altered the novel to make it more "sexy". P&P2 and E3 are my favorite Austen adaptations with the Andrew Davies screenplay, even if he did have Darcy jump in the pond near Pemberley. NA2 should not portray Isabella Thorpe having sex with Captain Frederick Tilney or Catherine Morland's dream sequence in which she is naked in a bathtub in front of Henry Tilney. Isabella was too shrewd to have sex with Frederick.
Try watching NA1 again. I know the music is not period appropriate (although I liked it) and the dream sequences are from the novels Catherine was reading. The Marchioness never existed in the novel. I believe the actors played the characters as they were depicted in the novel- Isabella a gold digger but never had sex, John Thorpe manipulative and silly, Catherine Morland innocent, Mrs. Allen too obsessed with clothing, Henry Tilney intelligent and witty, and General Tilney gruff but pleasant to Catherine when he thought she had money.
I bought a refrigerator magnet from ROP with a quote directly from the novel and NA1- "I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligible".
