When his engagement with Isabella was dissolved, he wrote to Catherine: "poor Thorpe is in town. I dread the sight of him, his honest heart would feel so much." That time, he had not the real insight in his dear frinds character. But, as we learn afterwards, John tried to get James and Isabella together again, and did not succeed. So, perhaps, James did in the end understand, that Thorpe was no real fried to him.
