...with Isabella helped color his view of John, but I agree that James had already become friends with John before he met his sister. If John thought James was wealthy, he no doubt did his best to impress James, and clearly portrayed himself as a "player."

James may at first have been amused and flattered at the attention, only to become more involved with the Thorpes through Isabella.

I agree that Catherine showed far more common sense than James in spite of James's recommendation of Isabella as a friend. Catherine had the advantage to meet Mr. Tilney before she met John, to have Mr. Allen as a source of advice, and then to have principles from home to help her navigate this first plunge into swirling waters.
