I vaguely remember a story about a guy named Richard being attracted to Jane and her family liked to make goodhearted fun of that to her, to which Jane replied something along the lines of "I will not change my last name until he changes his first name!"

It might also be a reference to Richard III in her History of England, I don't know. I think she just didn't like the name, and gave it to Catherine's father as a sort of joke: This man has a horrid name, but he is a very nice person nonetheless.

As for the History of England, it is definitely tongue-in-cheek:) (though further discussion of that belong at the Austenuations board)
