Do not forget, he fully intends them both to continue on his way and have a good time, after doing that to Catherine! Thorpe is actually surprised and displeased that her emotions do not ebb on realizing that there is nothing she can do about his rude, high-handed, dishonest behavior.

If he had been trying to ruin her day, he acted exactly as he should. Since he was trying to be the best time she ever had *nods to Romancing the Stone* it took him a REALLY long time to figure out that he had miscalculated!
