He might have been blinded by riches

Imagined riches though they may be. It's been a couple of years since I read NA as well, but this is what chiefly explained his behavior to my understanding. I think he was so bent on gaining a rich relation that in considering his plans, he probably listened to every argument that was in its favor no matter how questionable the source, jumped to conclusions, and ignored any reasoning that would have meant he could not snag a rich wife for his son. Kind of like someone falling for a get-rich quick scheme or phony stock tip.
