Who is flirtatious around women but sensible around men, as Mr. Knightley tells Emma.

So it could be with men in those days. They stayed after dinner with the port, and there was much more of a sense of men only than we have today. Ladies being present changed the social rules to a degree where they might be completely different in mixed company than with men alone.
