in consequence of the missive, General Tilney, penned by Peter
Most (all?) of John Thorpe's dialogue is with Catherine or in Catherine's presence. Does he, perhaps, overdo his boasting & preening when she's around compared to when he's with men only? I'm wondering if Thorpe is a failure on JA's part or if she's trying to present a young man who is able to act (somewhat, at least) more sensibly in the company of men only? General Tilney doesn't really care about Catherine's good qualities, but I don't believe he ever met Isabella Thorpe, much less thought about her faults of character. I agree that he doesn't seem to be the type of man who would have been a good commanding officer, however. |
