In this clue   Written by Srirup (7/23/2012 8:15 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, The anagram, penned by Tom P2
Are you new?

I think "playing" hints at the anagram, as in "playing" with letters. And there is always a separate hint to the final solution, in this case "work" meaning book, as in Jane Austen's "works".

An additional cleverness was the use of "Bath" and "bygone" in the anagram both being relevant to the final solution "Northanger Abbey".

All this is interesting if one is in the habit of wasting a lot of time in these sort of crosswords. (Guilty, m'lud)
