Regarding the age of majority, I have indeed mistakenly used the word 'legally'. It was really just a social convention or prabably what was thought best.
(My other main deduction - though not strictly Austen- is implied in Wuthering Heights when Cathy Linton says " I'm almost seventeen: I'm a woman." She later was able to marry Linton Heathcliff without her father's formal consent, although neither of them were of age)
In Emma, Harriet Smith is permitted to come out with Mrs Goddard at seventeen, having at that age been raised "from the condition of scholar to that of parlour-boarder"
