I had never noticed the unusual silence of Henry Crawford during this dinner, nor considered that Mary might be seeking his help in the conversation. But you're right, she does mention him at very specific points (help me out, brother!), and he doesn't respond at all. Only when Mrs Grant specifically addresses him -- and tactfully calls him out on his silence -- does he join in. And at this point, Mary has made her infamous "Rears and Vices" quip and says no more.
