MP2, Oh my!   Written by Robbin (1/29/2013 12:57 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Straw men?, penned by Julie P.
Are you new?

MP2 has great cinematography, I am not sickened by the costuming and except for Fanny I like the casting well enough. That is generally all I remember good about it. My Mom however, really likes this movie and this Fanny and was surprised to learn the characters, especially Fanny, bore little resemblance to the characters in the novel. I have not pushed my Mom to read the novel; it seems at this point it is best just to let her enjoy what she likes without my trying to change her mind. She is not JA obsessed, sadly for me not even a little which I hope explains my lack of action.

I think this movie, if seen first, may lead some to be disappointed in the novel!

If you are expecting an impertinent, budding novelist then it might be a shock to find the real Fanny shy and religious, riding sidesaddle upon a gentle plodding pony rather than astride a galloping horse like a gothic heroine. I never quite understand why a quietly brave Fanny is so dislikeable she must be changed, or Sir Thomas, Lady Bertram, Tom and that is unfortunately only the beginning. I do own MP2 because buying it was the only way I would be able to see it at the time. For me MP2 was the disappointment but I am comforted somewhat because like other adaptations it can be made useful as a driver for examining the novel, the characters particularly. Even if trying to disprove a point despised I might find something new in the novel—I do not mean something with which to verify MP2’s nonsense and insensible changes but just stumbling across something new which after all is one of the great pleasures of reading JA time and again. (:D)
It is very uncomfortable indeed
