in consequence of the missive, Just wondering which adaptation to start with!, penned by Karen
But I do love the rest of it, too. Bernard Hepton has never given a bad performance, IMO, and I also like Nicholas Farrell as Edmund. Sylvestra Le Touzel took some getting used to, but now I cannot see anyone else in the role. My reaction to MP3 was "meh." But I think that the badness was unintentional. I don't think the filmmakers set out to make a bad adaptation. In the case of MP2, however, I fully believe that the badness was intentional. Several Pemberleans (including yours truly) saw the film at a special screening in NY and Patricia Rozema told the audience that she didn't like Mansfield Park, she didn't like Fanny Price and she thought she could do better. To quote the younger generation, "I don't think so!" In my personal opinion, MP2 is the single worst JA adaptation of all. It's the only one I refuse to own. Only the names of the characters (the ones she deigned to keep, that is) remain the same. The plot was changed completely. |
