When Edmund wrote to Fanny, why did he assume that she already knew all about the runaway lovers? He knew nothing about the note from Miss Crawford to Fanny hoping that all would be "hushed up." There had been one paragraph in the newspaper which mentioned only initials, not names, and no guarantee that Fanny would have read or heard about that.
Was it because the disaster loomed so enormously to the Bertram family that they assumed that the whole world must be talking about it?
Had Miss Crawford not written, and had Mr Price not noticed the paragraph in the newspaper, I wonder what Fanny would have made of Edmund's letter.
