...but I'm inclined to think that Golda has the right idea: if *he* tried to back out of the marriage, he could kiss his fiancee's fortune goodbye, but if *she* backed out and the papers were already signed, he could keep the money (at least in theory). (And I agree that fighting for the truth on moral grounds does not play a large part in this novel!)
