But I am still wondering how lethal an objection raised by the vicar would be especially if he had to offer some proof.

I am quite surprised that the handing over of the woman's fortune to the man she was to marry was independant of the marriage itself.

I had always thought that it was the marriage which eventually made the man the master of the woman's fortune, and that the two acts were tied together.

This certainly was an encouragement to men like Mr. Thornhill - to sign and not marry.
