that his interference earlier regarding the two ladies they were to accompany to London was based on the fact that he knew how it was with his nephew.

Maybe he didn't know how bad things were, or he didn't have proof enough.

I also wonder if the people would talk freely about Mr. Thornhill's misconduct with the girls in the village, that too to a stranger.
