Once the income-earner was incarcerated for being unable to pay his debts, there would be no income for the rest of the family. They would accompany him to the debtors prison where he would work towards paying off his debt (and paying off his keep - it wasn't free in jail) or die from the diseases running rampant.

The second one is long, but explains how all criminals were lumped in together...kind of what the Vicar was expounding upon when he said that people go in for one kind of minor crime and come out with the knowledge/capability to commit a thousand.
