Are you new?

I kept wondering why Olivia and her father felt that her promise to keep Thornhill's secret about the false marriage was valid. It was no secret that she ran off, so it wasn't as if Olivia's reputation could be saved with their silence. What was to be gained by it? What honor were they displaying? If anything, they were abetting his evil ways.
