Not sure what you call the short summary in the beginning of each chapter?

I noticed that they are in the pop up version and in my translated VoW, but in the English Everyman's Library version that was on our shelf, they are only in the contents list. Thus reading that one you are not "introduced" when you start on a new chapter.
Since I am very fond of this, adds sort of ancient touch to a novel, I came to wonder if it is skipped in more editions?
