slaves to fashion?   Written by Lynn Marie (5/3/2005 11:58 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, And another, penned by JulieW
Are you new?

I can't help but think that in viewing this dress and others that women wore during this time period, that it reflects womens' role in society. The dresses are certainly pretty and I suppose allowed a certain freedom of expression, but are not practical in allowing freedom of movement. Women were so limited in their life choices and their manner of dress was meant to be attractive and somewhat frivolous. Their main goal was to draw the attention of the right man and secure him in marriage. What did it matter whether they could move around with ease?

The clothing for men on the other hand, while rather lacey and more ruffley than what modern people are used to,was still made so that the man could run, ride horses, march, etc.,virtually anything they wanted to do.
I see parallels to some of today's fashions such as low waisted pants for women that don't allow freedom of movement without exposing too much! How much are women still willing to give up for fashion?
