I took this to mean that HAD the vicar taken the trouble to (or hedged his bets by) having insured a good education for all his children, the children would at least have had the comfort of being well-educated. Insults from wealthy but ignorant persons would have rolled off their backs as they realized the lasting and intrinsic value of education. Money can be lost, but not so education or a good name.
